Is It Time to Get a Hearing Test?

It’s never a bad idea to get your hearing checked even if you don’t think you’re having any problems hearing.  A baseline assessment of your hearing can always be used as a comparison years from now when you think you might be having a problem.  But, how do you know if you might be having a problem today?

E

Do you have trouble hearing over the phone?

E

Do you plan your nights out based on how loud it might be at your destination?

E

Do you often ask others to repeat what they said?

E

Do you have a harder time hearing women and children?

E

Do others complain the TV is too loud?

A Hearing Test Evaluation, Explained

A visit to the doctor can be stressful for some people.  Below is a brief explanation of what you can expect to happen when you have your hearing evaluated at our office.

Detailed History

We’ll begin by taking a detailed history. We’ll ask a series of questions about your medical, work and personal life as it relates to your ears and your hearing.

Impedance Audiometry

Impedance or Immittance Audiometry gives us an idea of how well the eardrum, the middle ear bones and a few of your ears reflexes are working.

Physical Examination

The next step is an examination of your ears.  We’ll thoroughly examine your ears for any physical condition that might indicate a need for a medical referral.

Pure Tone Audiometry

This is what you probably think of as a “hearing test”.  Your hearing levels are measured using tones and words.  Providing us with sensitivity levels and discrimination ability.

What Happens After the Test?

We will explain the results to you and if the results indicate a problem, we’ll provide you with recommendations.  We believe your journey to better hearing should be a partnership with you and your Doctor of Audiology.

The Benefits of Treating Hearing Loss

The good news about hearing loss is that for most people it’s absolutely treatable. Today’s hearing aids help with most types and degrees of hearing loss — enabling people with hearing loss to hear better in virtually every situation. Experts also recommend you treat hearing loss sooner rather than later. Not only is untreated hearing loss linked to numerous physical and mental health risks as we age, the longer we live with impaired hearing, the longer and harder it will be to recover the sounds we’ve been missing and get acclimated once treatment starts.

Hearing Loss Over Time

For most people, hearing loss doesn’t happen overnight. Instead, it’s gradual, slowly getting worse over the years. This gradualness can be deceiving, and can cause many people to be unsure that what they’re experiencing is really hearing loss.

How to Convince Someone They Need a Hearing Test

You are married to, live with or love someone who is clearly struggling to hear. How do you convince them that it’s time to get their hearing checked?

The quickest way to bring someone around to the realization that they might be having a problem hearing is to stop being a human hearing aid.  Frequent repetitions, tolerating the volume louder than you know it should be and repeating someone else’s conversation to them is a sign that you are becoming their hearing aids.  The average person waits for 5 – 7 years to do something about their hearing loss.  The sooner they do something about the problem, the happy everyone will be.
